Career-Highs Lift Long Beach State over CSUN in Reverse Sweep

Katie Kennedy, Zayna Meyer, and Savana Chacon each set new career-highs in the Beach’s win over the Matadors

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Three Beach players recorded career-highs, while two registered 20-plus kills, and Zayna Meyer posted a double-double in Long Beach State's reverse sweep victory over CSUN, 3-2 [21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-6] on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (8-6, 3-3 Big West) hit a season-high .286 in the match, while CSUN (6-12, 1-5 Big West) posted a whopping 20.0 total team blocks in an exciting contest. The Beach led in every statistical category, with the exception of blocks, as the Beach posted a season-high in kills (77) and assists (71), while limiting the Matadors to just 43 kills and 42 assists. Defensively, LBSU held the edge in digs (63-47) and aces (6-3).
Meyer set the tone for the Long Beach State offense as the redshirt freshman distributed a career-high 62 assists to go along with 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season and her second in as many matches. She also posted six kills on a .444 attack percentage (6-2-9) and a team-leading four blocks.
Leading the offensive attach for Long Beach were junior opposite Katie Kennedy and redshirt junior Morgan Chacon as they both tallied at least 20 kills in the match. Kennedy led the way with a career-high 23 kills on a .441 clip (23-8-34), while Morgan Chacon posted 20 kills on a .318 mark (20-6-44).
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Jaylen Jordan also contributed offensively with 13 kills to go along with eight digs, while senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach added eight kills and a team-high four blocks.
In the backrow, sophomore defensive specialist Savana Chacon reached a new career-best with 18 digs, while senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz chipped in 16.
CSUN got out to a quick lead as the Matadors claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23 over Long Beach State. Despite exchanging leads five times over two games, the Beach came up short in a pair of hard-fought sets in which they stayed within striking distance.
Trailing 2-0, Long Beach State came out of the locker room after the break and opened the third set on a 6-0 run as Tia Chavira led the way at the service line. The Beach showed the definition of LB Grit as they surged ahead leading the set by as many as eight on several occasions en route to winning 25-17.
Despite a close start that saw three ties and as many lead changes, the Beach once again turned to Chavira who served up another 6-0 run highlighted by back-to-back aces to put Long Beach State up 8-4. From there, the Beach never looked back. They used a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 14-7, and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way before taking the fourth, 25-17, to force a fifth and deciding set.
With momentum on their side, Long Beach bounded into the fifth set and took a quick 4-1 lead. But the side switch and media timeout, LBSU led 8-3. The Beach hit an sizzling .556 (11-1-18) in the frame and posted a perfect sideout percentage of 100% as they cruised to a 15-6 victory to complete the reverse sweep.
CSUN was led offensively by Nicole Nevarez who had 15 kills on a .256 attack percentage. Nevarez also added eight digs, seven blocks, and one assist. Breanna Mitchell logged 15 digs at libero, while Taylor Hunter was impressive at the net with 12 block assists.
Long Beach State will take on UC San Diego on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
