LA JOLLA, Calif. – Four career-highs and a trio of double-doubles lifted Long Beach State to an exciting 3-2 [26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14] come-from-behind victory over UC San Diego on Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
The Beach (9-6, 4-3 The Big West) hit .251 in the match, while the Tritons (8-11, 1-6 The Big West) hit .195 in the competitive contest that saw a total of 27 ties and 15 lead changes.
Long Beach took the first set, but then dropped the next two as UC San Diego took a 2-1 set lead. Despite being down, the Beach turned up the heat in the fourth set as they broke an early tie and surged ahead to lead by as many as eight (22-14) before winning, 25-21, to force a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set saw Long Beach fall behind, 13-10, before UCSD pushed it to match point, 14-11. With their backs against the wall, the Beach showed their grit and determination as they fought to score five-straight points and win the set and match, 16-14, on a kill from Katie Kennedy.
Kennedy had an outstanding match as she finished with a team-high 23 kills which tied her career-best, while hitting .360. Coming in just behind her was redshirt freshman Jaylen Jordan who registered a career-high 22 kills to go along with a career-best 13 digs for her first-career double-double. Jordan also hit .314 on the night.
Joining Jordan with a double-double was redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon who rattled off 16 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Additionally, redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer joined the double-double party as she concluded the match with a career-high 64 assists and 11 digs. She also added four blocks on the defensive end.
If that weren't enough, the defensive highlight of the night was senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz's career-high 34 digs. She bested her previous career-high by 10 digs and became the first Long Beach State player since 2010 to notch 30-plus digs in a single-match. The last time a Beach player reached that feat was on October 9, 2010 when Lauren Minkel recorded 32 digs against Pacific.
At the net, senior middle blocker Callie Scwharzenbach led the team with five blocks as she posted on solo stop to go along with four block assists.
UC San Diego had several solid showings as well as Ava McInnes led the way with 31 kills, while setter Izzi Strand added 59 assists. Naya Dong and Zaria Henderson led the backrow with 17 digs each. Henderson also added 15 kills for a double-double.
Long Beach State looks to win its fourth-straight contest on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host UC Irvine at the Walter Pyramid at 7 p.m. in the Black and Blue Rivalry game.
