LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team won their fourth consecutive match and third-straight five-set contest as the Beach defeated UC Irvine, 3-2 [25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12] on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid in the Black and Blue Rivalry match.

The Beach (10-6, 5-3 The Big West) turned in a solid defensive effort posting a season-high 15.0 total team blocks to go along with 87 digs. Long Beach State also led UC Irvine (11-7, 4-4 The Big West) in attack percentage (.217-.146), kills (67-60), and assists (66-59), while the Anteaters held the edge on aces (6-2).

For the third-straight contest, the Beach has used all five sets to take down their opponents. Against UC Irvine, Long Beach State started off hot as the Beach won the first two sets. But the Anteaters made things interesting as they came back and won the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and deciding set. Long Beach pulled out the victory, but not before battling UCI through 37 ties and 11 lead changes throughout the match.

Redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer paced the Beach with 52 assists, while adding 17 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. She also contributed offensively knocking down six kills on seven swings, while committing just one error as she hit a team-leading .714. Additionally, she posted four blocks and one ace in another all-around solid effort for the product out of Wheaton, Ill.

Morgan Chacon, a redshirt junior outside hitter, led the team with 17 kills, while she also finished with a double-double adding 11 digs, four blocks, and an ace. On the year, Chacon now has amassed 14 double-figure kill performances.
Chacon led a trio of double-figure scorers in junior opposite Katie Kennedy and redshirt freshman outside hitter Jaylen Jordan who tallied 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Jordan also added a 13 digs to tie her career-high en route to notching a double-double.

Senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz picked up right where she left of last night. After logging a career-high 34 digs last night, she came back and registered 25 digs marking her fifth 20-plus dig showing of the year. She led a quartet of Beach players who scored double-digit digs in the match. Following Dela Cruz were Meyer (17 digs), Jordan (13 digs), Morgan Chacon (11 digs), and Savana Chacon (11 digs).

Middle blockers Callie Schwarzenbach and Kameron Bacon patrolled the net as Schwarzenbach tied her season-best with eight blocks and Bacon set a new career-high with seven blocks. Kennedy, Meyer, and Chacon added four blocks each, while Jordan posted three.

Long Beach State and UC Irvine matched each other point-for-point in the competitive contest. In the first set, the two teams went back and forth until LBSU broke a 20-20 tie on a 3-0 run en route to winning the first set, 25-21.

The second set saw 15 ties and five lead changes in the back-and-forth affair. The two teams needed overtime to finish it off as the Beach came out on top 27-25.

With a 2-0 lead, Long Beach State battled UC Irvine in the third set. However, the Anteaters broke a 19-19 tie, then closed the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-21.

UC Irvine opened the fourth set on a 4-0 run and never looked back. The Anteaters led the entire set. Despite Long Beach State chipping away at the lead to make it a two point game (23-21), UCI pulled away and won, 25-22, to force a fifth set.

The fifth set started off back and forth, much like the first three sets. However, an attack from Kennedy was called out and Long Beach challenged. The Beach won the challenge and the score was tied up 7-7. That seemed to be the turning point as Kennedy's kill sparked a 5-0 run that put LBSU up 11-7. UCI pilled within one (12-11), but the Beach surged ahead and put the game and match away on a kill from Schwarzenbach to win, 15-12.

UC Irvine's Joy Umeh and Onye Ofoegbu each tallied a team-leading 18 kills, while hitting .208 and .316, respectively. Campbell Jensen had a solid night at libero with 21 digs, while Kelly Negron (28 assists) and Indy DeSmet (23 assists) split time at setter. Ofoegbu also led the team at the net with seven blocks.

Long Beach State looks to extend its winning streak as they head to Riverside, Calif., to take on UCR on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the SRC Arena.
