Long Beach State Wins Fifth-Straight With 3-2 Win at UC Riverside

Morgan Chacon ties her career-high, Zayna Meyer records another double-double, and Dylan Dela Cruz has another 30-dig performance in the victory

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State extended its winning streak to five as the Beach downed UC Riverside, 3-2 [25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9] on Thursday night at the SRC Arena.
The Beach (11-6, 6-3 The Big West) earned a gritty win against a tough Highlanders (4-14, 27-7 The Big West) squad as LBSU won its fourth-consecutive five-setter. Long Beach hit .230 in the contest, while knocking down 69 kills to UCR's 58. Additionally, the Beach held the lead over the Highlanders in assists (63-48) and digs (84-80). Meanwhile, UCR outblocked LBSU 7-1 and held the edge in aces, 7-6.
Several Long Beach State players continued their tear as redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon tied her career-high with 26 kills, while hitting .274. She also added eight digs, two assists, and one ace. She led a trio of player who reached double-figure kills as Victoria O'Sullivan tallied a season-high 15 kills, while hitting .400 (15-3-30) and Katie Kennedy added 14 kills.
Redshirt freshman Zayna Meyer has been solid leading the LBSU offense as she distributed 47 assists to go along with 14 digs, seven kills, and one ace, while hitting .583 (7-0-13) en route to her team-leading 11th double-double of the season.
Dylan Dela Cruz has been on fire as of late. After recording a career-high 34 digs at UC San Diego, she poured in another 30-dig showing at UC Riverside with 32. In the last three matches, Dela Cruz has averaged more than 6.00 digs per set. She has now registered 16 double-digit kill performances on the year and six 20-plus digs showings this season.
Also contributing to Long Beach's stout defense in the backcourt were Nicole Hoff (8 digs), Savana Chacon (7 digs), and Jaylen Jordan (7 digs). Savana Chacon also added three aces from the service line.
Long Beach State hit .343 in the opening set as the Beach tallied 15 kills and earned a 77% sideout percentage. Morgan Chacon contributed six kills on eight errorless swings to hit .750 in the frame as LBSU cruised to a 25-17 win over UCR.
The Highlanders kicked things up a notch in the second set as they started the game on a 4-0 run and never looked back. UC Riverside hit .342 in the set and held the lead throughout. Long Beach State closed the gap and made it a one-point game (12-11), but Riverside used a timeout to get the momentum back on their side as they went on to win, 25-19.
The third set was a battle as UCR took an early 8-3 lead. The Highlanders held a steady lead over the Beach, but Long Beach State would not quit. LBSU chipped away at UCR's lead and used a 6-0 run, highlighted by three-straight kills from O'Sullivan, to even the game at 21-all. From there, the two teams traded points back and forth until a Morgan Chacon kill sent it to set point and O'Sullivan put the game away with a kill as LBSU won, 25-23.
Riverside jumped out in front 8-4 in the fourth set, but Long Beach State was quick tie the game at 8-8 after a 4-0 run. The Beach broke a 10-10 tie on a block by Callie Schwarzenbach that seemed to spark LBSU to a 21-16 advantage. With the game and set looking to go Long Beach State's way, UC Riverside battled back and finished the set on a 5-0 run to win, 25-23, forcing a fifth set.

UCR managed to pull within two (10-8), but Morgan Chacon knocked down back-to-back kills as the Beach took the momentum back and won, 15-9, on another Morgan Chacon kill.
UC Riverside had four players in double-figures as Mylei Vargas-Deason led the way with 14 kills. Behind her, Isabella Scarett finished with 12 kills, while Anya Green and Coco Ikpe added 10 kills apiece. Setter Tayler Hifo recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 20 digs to go along with four aces, while libero Jessica Dean added 19 digs.
Long Beach State looks to extend its winning streak to six on Saturday, Oct. 22 when the Beach take on UC Davis at 7 p.m.
