Long Beach State led most of the match, but two late Highlander goals forced a 2-2 tie.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got two goals from Lena Silano, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with UC Riverside in their conference opener. The Beach (1-4-4, 0-0-1 Big West) led for 86 minutes in total with the Highlanders (2-2-5, 0-0-1 Big West) scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to ultimately force the tie.
Both sides were evenly matched through the first 45 minutes, each totaling three shots and a save. However, with just 12 second left in the half, Silano netted her first to break the nil-nil score.
As UCR attempted to clear it out of their own half, Alia Sinoff stepped up from the backline to intercept the pass before finding Silano just outside the box who then dribbled through four Highlander defenders before beating the keeper near post. The goal gave the Beach a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Aguora Hills native started the second half the same way she ended the first, netting a goal with the right foot inside the box. The play started with Summer Laskey finding a decent look around the eight-yard line, but her shot was saved and forced left. The sophomore would track down her own rebound and pass it to Silano just inside the eighteen for the finish.
It is the second brace of the season for the senior and fifth in her career. She now has seven goals this season and 18 over her last two seasons moving her into a tie for eighth-most in program history.
Holding a two-goal lead, the Beach held the UCR offense in check until a foul in the 71st minute gave the Highlanders a penalty kick. Their leading scorer, Alex Hargrave would beat Morgan Houston-Shepherd right to end the shutout.
UC Riverside would wind up scoring the game-tying goal in the 87th minute on a long ball down field that saw Leyna Wood beat the Beach backline and finish far post to make it 2-2.
Long Beach State had some tough luck in the final 10 minutes with three tremendous shots that just did not find the back of the net. The first was a Maddy Perez missile on a free kick just outside the box in the corner, but the UCR keeper got her fingers on it to force it high. The second would have given Silano a hat trick, but her header would bounce off the post and get cleared.
Arguably the most heartbreaking of the three was a Sophie Jones shot inside the box in the 88th minute that would have put the Beach back in front, but it hit the crossbar and bounced out. The 2-2 tie marks the fourth of the season as LBSU moves to 1-4-4 overall on the season.
Long Beach State will continue conference play next week, hosting CSU Bakersfield on Thursday. Kickoff will be at 6:00 p.m. at George Allen Field.
