Long Beach State continue to be well-represented in the big leagues.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Major League Baseball season is here and once again, the Dirtbags will be well-represented with four alumni being named to Opening Day rosters.
Bryan Shaw represents the longest tenured alum on an opening day roster after inking a new contract with the Cleveland Guardians this offseason. The right-hander has proven to be one of the most durable bullpen arms after leading the league in appearances in the 2021 season. Appearing in 81 games, he has led that category four times in his 11 seasons.
Matt Duffy returned home to California this summer with a contract with the Los Angeles Angels. This will be the fourth different team of his career as he begins his seventh season in the majors. The utility infielder is expected to platoon at second base for the Halos during the 2022 season.
Jeff McNeil finds himself back as a regular in the Mets' lineup this year. Entering his fifth season, he is expected to play all over the diamond in New York and be a key contributor as his team fights for the National League East title.
The fourth and final Dirtbag alum is utility man, Garrett Hampson, who will be suiting up in purple and black for the fifth year of his career. Primarily a second baseman, he saw a lot of time in center field for Colorado last year and is expected to have a similar role this season.
While he is starting the season on the injured list after having surgery to repair a tendon in his finger, Evan Longoria will be playing his fifteenth season this year. Once healthy, he will likely be back at the hot corner for San Francisco.
In addition to the players, there are some Long Beach State alum on major league staffs again this year. Brandon Hyde enters his fourth year as the manager of the Baltimore Orioles while Jeremy Reed will once again be the hitting coach in Los Angeles as he will work hand-in-hand with Duffy. Eric Martins is back in Oakland as the first base/infield coach for the A's. Edgar Varela will serve as the Coordinator of Instruction in Minnesota. Lastly, Yosuke Nakajima is going into his 20tha season as part of the medical staff for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
