The Beach went 2-1 on day one of the conference tournament advancing to the quarter finals tomorrow morning.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - No. 11 Long Beach State went 2-1 on day one of the Big West Tournament to advance to the quarter finals on Saturday morning. The Beach began their Big West Championship push with a sweep against Sacramento State, 5-0, loss against No. 14 Cal Poly, 3-2, and a second dominant sweep for the day against CSU Bakersfield, 5-0.
The Beach contained the Hornets from reaching a third set in all five flights. Before matching up with Sacramento State today, Long Beach State have dominated the Hornets, never losing a match, including a sweep earlier this season on March 26th. Unfortunately, after Long Beach State earned their first victory of the tournament, they came up short against a tough matchup with No. 14 Cal Poly.
To start the match Long Beach State was able to tie the dual 1-1 after the duo of Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy defeated the Mustangs duo of Jayelin Lombard and Piper Ferch. The first set extended to extra points with a score of 22-20. Stevens and Kennedy were then able to shut down the Mustangs, 21-14 and give the Beach its first point of the day. However, the third and fourth flight being crucial to the Beach, they unfortunately came up short in a grueling match with the Mustangs. After dropping the third flight, the Beach still had the opportunity to win the dual in their fourth flight. With a third set on the line between Long Beach State duo Nicci Reinking and Claire Newlander, they would fall short 15-12 against Cal Poly's duo Mariah Whalen and Piper Naess giving the No. 14 Mustang's an upset victory.
Nonetheless, after a tough loss against the Mustangs the Beach recuperated and earned their second sweep of the day against CSU Bakersfield. It was a dominant performance by the Beach to claim all five flights. Long Beach State duo's, Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy, Skyler Germann and Alice Pratesi, Sophie Major and Christine DeRoos defeated the Mustangs in their third respective sets with a score of 15-12 (flight 2), 15-11 (flight 1), and 15-13 (flight 5). Jillian Rodriguez and Emily Mattoon, Nicci Reinking and Claire Newlander would also continue to impress for the Beach winning their sets as well completing an impressive sweep.
The Beach continues their Big West Tournament journey tomorrow at 9am as they await their next respective opponent.
