Long Beach State improved to 21-9 in doubles dual match play after two more wins Sunday against the Gaels.
LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Long Beach State once again got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point, but St. Mary's rebounded to take all six singles matches to grab the 6-1 win Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
"It was a great performance in doubles," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "It was a tough day in singles with the line up shift, but we will be better in our next match because of the challenge we faced today."
The match was off to a tremendous start in the doubles contest with top flight Zara Lennon and Sheena Masuda claiming the first doubles point for the Beach against Jocelyn Massey and Julia Ronney, 6-4. The doubles point was then clinched with Claire Le Du and Arina Babkova defeating Lene Mari Hovda and Gabriela Tevez, 6-2.
During singles play, the lineup was shifted at the last minute giving St. Mary's a small advantage. St. Mary's evened the match as Julia Ronney won against Clair Le Du 6-0, 6-2 in the third flight. In the sixth flight, Gabriela Tevez won against Zuzanna Szczepanska 6-0, 6-1, and Lene Mari Hovda added another point for the Gaels versus Peppi Ramstedt, 6-1, 6-3. Nikola Homolkova battled back to force a second-set tiebreak, but the Gaels took the win as Mariia Kozyreva won the top-flight match, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Playing out the match, the Gaels took the remaining singles points behind wins from Jordan Harris and Jocelyn Massey over Sheena Masuda and Arina Babkova respectively.
The Beach returns to Rhodes Tennis Center on Thursday, March 17 at 2 p.m. against Idaho. Live scoring of the match will be available on www.beachlivestats.com.
