Hernandez, Ceballos Pick Up Key Hits As Long Beach State Beats Sacramento State

3/12/2022 4:36:00 PM | Softball

Frutoz, Fowler combined for seven innings in the circle as the Beach bounced back against the Hornets.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A bases-clearing double in the fourth inning from senior Naomi Hernandez provided the support the Beach needed, as Long Beach State picked up a 6-4 win over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon as the Louisville Slugger Invitational continued at the LBSU Softball Complex.

Long Beach State (9-12) took the early lead on Saturday. Senior Kyra Snyder led off the second inning with a single, and after a double from Ashleigh Inae, Mikayla Ceballos singled to center field to bring home two runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Sara Olson doubled to start the third, and after being pushed to third, came home to score on a Sacramento State (11-12) error to increase the LBSU lead to 3-0.

Shelby Frutoz, who had thrown three hitless innings to that point, ran into trouble in the fourth with a leadoff single. The sophomore was able to pick up two outs, three additional hits led to three runs as the Hornets tied the score.

Long Beach State immediately bounced back to retake the lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Inae's second hit of the day, a single, started off the inning, and after a second Sacramento State error and a walk, Hernandez doubled into the gap to bring the lead back to three runs once more, 6-3.

Samantha Fowler came on in relief in the fifth inning, and allowed two hits hit over three frames to record the three-inning save, her second save of the season. The Hornets pushed across one final run after a leadoff double from Carley Morfey, but Fowler limited the damage to just one run, finishing with three strikeouts.

The final day of Long Beach State's home tournament is on Sunday as the LBSU Softball Complex will once again feature three games. UCF and Nebraska will kick off the day at 9 a.m., and then the Beach will face both teams, scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
