Long Beach State Loses To Iowa State On Second Day Of Louisville Slugger Invitational

The Beach were shut out by the Cyclones in the second day of the tournament.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State fell behind early against Iowa State, and had a hard time with Cyclones starting pitcher Ellie Spelhaug, who pitched a complete game shutout as the Beach fell in their only game on Friday.
Iowa State (14-7) picked up a trio of runs in the first inning. After a leadoff walk, Mo Quinlan as able to pick up two outs, but a single from Milaysia Ochoa extended the inning and brought home a run. The Cyclones then led the bases, leading to two more runs coming home as Iowa State took a 3-0 lead. Iowa State then scored another run in the second inning.
Spelhaug struck out six as Long Beach State (8-12) created their biggest threat in the fourth inning. After Sarah Olson reached on an error to start the inning, Long Beach State got a pair of infield singles from Corissa Sweet and Ashleigh Inae to load the bases, but Spelhaug induced a ground ball double play to end the inning.
A three-run home run in the sixth inning from Carli Spelhaugh helped put the game out of reach, and Iowa State closed out the 8-0 win over seven innings.
The Louisville Slugger Invitational continues on Saturday with three more games at the LBSU Softball Complex. The Beach will host two more neutral games before taking on Sacramento State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.
