Long Beach State Advances With 72-61 win over CSU Bakersfield

Joel Murray scored 25 points to lead Long Beach State as the Beach pulled away in the second half.
HENDERSON, Nev. – Top seed Long Beach State pushed the pace and eventually broke down (9) CSU Bakersfield to open quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament, forcing 21 turnovers and scoring 26 fast-break points to advance in the first of four games on Thursday.
Long Beach State (19-11) was led by junior Joel Murray, who scored 25 points and also contributed 25 points, leading a strong effort on the day. Jordan Roberts added 16 points and Jason Jones chipped in 14 points with three in double-figures form the Beach.
CSU Bakersfield (8-19) to recover from a 15-11 early deficit with an 8-0 run, and ultimately took a five-point edge, their biggest of the game with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. The Beach was able to bounce back with a run of their own, and held a three-point edge at halftime.
The runners had one more push, taking a 40-39 lead with 14:44 to play, but Long Beach State responded with a 15-2 run. Pushing the pace, Long Beach State found Murray on the break to open a 12-point lead at 54-42.
Continuing to build an edge, a three-point play in the final minutes from Drew Cobb allowed Long Beach State to get some much needed rust from the bench with a 71-54 lead, and closed out a 72-61 win over CSU Bakersfield.
Long Beach State will face the winner of (4) UC Irvine and (5) UC Santa Barbara, the second game of the day on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., with live coverage provided on ESPN+.
