Jadon Jones Sends Long Beach State To The Big West Tournament Finals In Instant Classic

3/11/2022 9:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Senior Colin Slater scored a career-high 30 points and Jadon Jones sank the buzzer beater with 1.3 seconds.

HENDERSON, Nev. – Tied 64-64 with 1.3 seconds remaining, Long Beach State found Jadon Jones at the top of the key for a game-winning 3-pointer, capping a fantastic clash between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Tournament Semifinals.

Long Beach State (20-11) was down four points with 1:23 remaining after UC Santa Barbara (17-11) took a 64-60 lead on a basket from Ajare Sanni. Coming back the other direction, Colin Slater was fouled to go to the free throw line where he cut the lead to two, and after a Jadon Jones steal, Drew Cobb found Aboubacar Traore under the basket to tie the game at 64-64.

After a final stop with a Traore rebound, the Beach came down and after a timeout, found Jadon Jones on the out-of-bounds entry for a deep three that sank the Gaucho hopes.
UCSB led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Long Beach State closed out the half on a 7-0 run to reclaim the momentum, trailing by five at 37-32.

With the Gauchos up seven, Long Beach State made their first crucial push out of the under 12 media timeout. Long Beach State went on an 8-0 run capped by a pair of Slater free throws to take a 50-49 lead, and neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way.

For Slater, it marked the sixth time in program history that a Long Beach State player scored 30 points in a Big West Tournament game, and marked a career-high for the senior. Traore was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Jones finished with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals after the game winner.

Long Beach State will play in the Big West Tournament Championship tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Beach is looking for the program's sixth Big West Tournament Championship, as well as the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance with a victory.
