Long Beach State Men’s Golf Finishes in the Top 10 at John Burns Intercollegiate

Tyler Schafer led the Beach with a 6-under par to finish in a tie for eighth place

LIHUE, Hawaii – The Long Beach State Men's Golf team turned in a strong finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Beach concluded the tournament with a 10th place finish and shot 3-over par as they were led by senior Tyler Schafer who also notched a Top 10 finish with a 6-under par showing.
The competitive tournament featured four nationally ranked teams and saw No. 38 New Mexico take the championship with a 25-under performance. Aaron Du of Cal was the individual medalist shooting a 203 for 13-under par.
The Beach were solid overall and led all Big West Conference teams at the tournament. LBSU finished ahead of UC Irvine (30-over) as well as host Hawaii (46-over) as the Beach shot 3-over par.
Schafer turned in an outstanding performance as he fired a 68 in the final round for 4-under par bringing his total to 6-under for the tournament. The senior from Long Beach, Calif., posted his first Top-10 showing of the season and the fourth of his career.
Redshirt junior Bryce Kvick shot a 70 for 2-under par in the final round to move up in a tie for 36th place as he finished the tournament with a 3-over par. Freshman Ian Gilligan finished in a tie for 58th along with teammate Jack Ainscough as the duo both shot a 7-over par. Isaac Rodea rounded out the Beach finishers with a 9-over par as he tied for 69th place after shooting even with par in the final round.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 21 at The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif. The three-day tournament is hosted by UC Davis and Stanford. Live stats will be available via GolfStat.com.
