LIHUE, Hawaii – The Long Beach State Men's Golf team opened up the spring season behind a solid showing from senior Tyler Schafer who led the Beach in the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala.
Schafer shot a 69 for 3-under par in the opening round and sits in a tie for 12th place after the first 18 holes.
Freshman Ian Gilligan is an even par as he shot a 72 in the first round, while senior Jack Ainscough is 5-over par, sophomore Isaac Rodea shot a 6-over par, and Bryce Kvick finished with a 7-over.
As a team, Long Beach State is in a four-way tie with UTEP, Cal, and Santa Clara for 14th place with an 8-over par showing.
Leading the way after the opening round is No. 27 Arizona who sits atop the leaderboard with 13-under par. Fresno State and No. 38 New Mexico are tied for second with 7-under par showings to round out the top three.
