Laskey’s Goal Sends Women’s Soccer to The Big West Championships Final

Sophomore Summer Laskey scored off her own rebound in the 62nd for the game-winner.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State is heading to the finals of The Big West Championships after taking down top-seeded Cal Poly, 1-0, on Thursday night. It will be the seventh finals appearance for the Beach since 2005.

In what became a very physical battle from the first whistle, neither team was able to score in the first half as they went into the break scoreless. The Beach owned a 6-3 shot advantage, led by Cherrie Cox's three.

The big highlight of the first half came at the end of the 31st minute with Cal Poly on the attack. On a ball in from the corner, the Mustangs got a solid header on target. However, Zora Standifer reacted quickly for an incredible leaping punch save to knock it over the crossbar and out. It was the first of four saves on the night for the sophomore keeper.

After 15 minutes of more back-and-forth to start the second half, Summer Laskey played hero and broke the scoreless tie. A pass to Lena Silano inside the box gave her a chance to cut toward the base line and send a perfect cross in. Laskey put a header on target, but it was saved by Cal Poly's Mackenzie Samuel. The rebound off Samuel's hands bounced down giving Laskey the chance to get a foot on it and send it far post and in.

The goal marks her sixth of the season and first game-winner of her career.

From there, the Beach defense stayed as strong as they had all night, fending off six Cal Poly shots in the final 25 minutes led by huge blocks from both Maddy Perez and Elysia Laramie. Aleea Caceres was also tremendous in the midfield keeping the Big West Midfielder of the Year, Camille Lafaix, locked down.

The 1-0 victory advances Long Beach State to the finals on Championship Sunday. It will be another round of the Black and Blue Rivalry taking on UC Irvine in a 1 p.m. matchup. It will be fourth time the two teams have matched up in The Big West Championships Finals.
