Three Beach athletes will compete for third place.
LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Long Beach State Tennis continued play at the Watanabe Classic on Saturday, where Justine Dondonay and the duo of Ramstedt-Dondonay will compete for third place in their singles and doubles match tomorrow.
The Beach competed at an elevated level today. Their passion and ability to display high energy is tremendous. Unfortunately, they endured some tough losses.
To start the day, Ramstedt-Dondonay competed in a highly competitive match against Mannix-Schmidt. Their flight went down to the wire, resulting in Iowa winning the flight, 7-6. However, Ramstedt-Dondonay will compete for third place tomorrow.
Masuda-Cook battled in a tight doubles match, but fell short, 6-4 against Skrobonja-Detkovskaya of SDSU.
In singles action, Justine Dondonay had a close second set to potentially extend it to a three-set match, but fell short, 6-2, 7-5 against Salsa Aher of UNLV. However, Dondonay will have the opportunity to compete for third place in flight three Sunday morning.
In flight four, the Beach experienced two singles matches that extended to three keenly contested matches. Hana Becirovic Novak fell short with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 against Coco Zhao of UNLV while Sheena Masuda battled, but fell short, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 against Pia Kranholdt of Iowa.
Sophomore Ramstedt captured a victory against Samantha Horwood of UNLV. She won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 while Sarah Medik advanced in her match by default. Both Beach athletes will compete in tomorrow's consolation finals matchup.
Play is scheduled to resume on Sunday at 10 A.M., with doubles play followed by singles action.
