Three Beach Tennis Athletes Advance to Semifinals

Justine Dondonay obtained LBSU's first victory of the day.
LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Long Beach State Tennis opened play at the Watanabe Classic on Friday, with three Beach athletes advancing to the semifinal round in their respective flights.
To begin the day in doubles action, the duo Sheena Masuda and Rhona Cook fell short in their matchup against Goncharova-Lopez of Utah, with a competitive score of 6-4.
Sarah Medik and Mathilde Tranberg competed for the first time as a duo, but unfortunately, experienced a tough loss in their doubles flight, falling short 6-3 against the home team of UNLV. However, both duos look forward to coming back tomorrow and competing in their consolation match.
In singles play Justine Dondonay obtained LBSU's first victory of the day in flight three. She earned her fifth singles victory as she dominated her flight 6-1, 6-3. Dondonay's victory against Anya Lamoreaux gave the Beach momentum to end the day on a positive note.
In flight four, Freshman Hana Becirovic Novak won a highly fought competitive three set flight against Utah's Katarina Herschlost, with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. She improved her singles record to 7-2 for the season.
Lastly, Sophomore Sheena Masuda took the court in flight four and defeated Karin Young of Oregon. She won a tightly contested set, 6-4, and dominated her second set, 6-1. All three Beach athletes battled tremendously and look to garner more victories in tomorrow's semifinal matches.
Play is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 10 A.M., with doubles play followed by singles action.
