Gilligan Leads Long Beach on First Day of Cal Poly Invitational

After two rounds, the Beach are in a tie for sixth as Ian Gilligan is in the Top 10

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a 7-under par showing to tie for sixth place after the first two rounds at the inaugural Cal Poly Invitational on Monday at the Preserve Golf Club. The Beach were led by sophomore Ian Gilligan who leads the way with a 5-under performance as he is tied for 10th thus far.
The Beach shot a 286 in the first round and found themselves in eighth place after the first 18 holes. But Long Beach State managed to come back in the second round and shave five strokes off their score to move into a tie for sixth place with SMU.
The competitive field featured nationally ranked programs such as No. 46 Northwestern, which sits at the top of the leaderboard with a 26-under par score after two rounds. Additionally, No. 36 Ohio State is second with a 19-under par showing, while No. 50 Marquette is in third with a 10-under par. No. 33 Washington and No. 24 Oregon are tied for fourth place as both shot 9-under in the first two rounds.
Gilligan led the Beach with a total score of 139 for 7-under par which placed him in a tied for 10th out of the 72 golfers that competed. He shot a 70 for 2-under par in the first round and a 69 for 3-under in the second round with a total of nine birdies on the day.
Freshman Jack Cantlay followed with an overall score of 141 for 3-under par as he fired a 69 in the first round and 72 in the second. He sits in a tie for 19th place heading into the final round.
Freshman Ivan Barahona made his collegiate debut at the Cal Poly Invitational and shot a 72 in both rounds for even par. Behind Barahona, Sebastian Vallejo was the Beach's fourth finisher with a 3-over par. Vallejo struggled in the opening round with a 77, but rebounded well shooting a 70 for 2-under par in the second round.
Lastly, freshman Jaden Huggins rounded out the Beach finishers with a 4-over par showing. He turned in his best performance in the second round as eagled the eighth hole.
The Beach will tee off in the final round on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow all the action on GolfStat.com.
