Women’s Soccer Cruises to Shutout Victory at Hawai’i

The Beach handed Hawaii their first home loss of the season with a 2-0 win.
HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Long Beach State went on the road and picked up a 2-0 road victory at Hawaii on Sunday afternoon. The win gives UH their first home loss of the season and moves the Beach (4-4-4) to an unbeaten 3-0-1 in Big West play.
The Beach came out hard and heavy on the attack registering six shots, four on goal, in the first 20 minutes of the match. While the first three that were on target were saved by the Rainbow Wahine goalie, Cherrie Cox broke the shutout in the 17th minute.
Maddy Perez would go short to Cox on a corner kick, who split a pair of Hawaii defenders to find Sophie Jones at the edge of the box. The freshman, Cox, would then run base line to be on the receiving end of the give-and-go and sending a shot far post and past the keeper for her second goal of the season.
Less than 15 minutes later in the 31st, Long Beach State added to their lead. In transition, Cox sent a perfect cross into the middle of the box for a Lena Silano header into the back of the net. It is her Big West leading ninth goal of the season and makes her the eighth player in program history with 20 career goals.
After 45 minutes, the Beach held a 2-0 lead and outshot the Rainbow Wahine nine to seven.
While the first half was very attack-heavy and offensive, the second half saw a change of tempo as the defense took over. Zora Standifer was tremendous in goal all game for LBSU totaling seven saves on the afternoon.
The 2-0 victory marks the third consecutive win for the Beach and puts them in sole possession of first place atop the Big West standings. It also extends their unbeaten streak against the Rainbow Wahine to 13 consecutive matches.
Long Beach State will be back in action next week, heading to UC Irvine on Sunday for a battle of the unbeaten teams in conference play.
