The Beach extended their lead atop the Big West standings to a full game over second place.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Soccer team ended an absolutely dominant six-point week with a 4-1 victory over CSUN on Sunday night. The win puts the Beach at 6-4-5 overall and kept them unbeaten at 5-0-2 in Big West play.
The seven consecutive matches without a loss is the longest for the program since the 2011 Elite 8 run when they won had two separate streaks, including eight straight victories into the postseason.
Long Beach came out of the gates firing against the Matadors with four shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, but all of them were saved by the keeper.
They finally broke through in the 33rd minute on Summer Laskey's fifth goal of the season. Lena Silano started the play with a pass to Cherrie Cox, who dribbled into the box tipping it toward far post to Laskey. The sophomore's shot went off the crossbar and down past the line for the score giving the Beach a 1-0 lead.
Just as they did on Thursday at UCSD though, LBSU scored their goals in a bunch finding the back of the net just six minutes later. Maddy Perez brought the ball across the midfield line, sending it into the heart of the CSUN defense for Cox to send a perfect chip over the backline. From there, Silano cut left to force the keeper to dive and tapped it in for an easy left-footed finish.
Just three minutes after in the 42nd minute, Perez in a similar situation found Julia Moore on the attack. Moore's pass downfield led a wide open Cox into a one-on-one with the Matador goalie. The freshman sent her shot right and in for the fifth goal of her rookie season giving Long Beach State a 3-0 lead at the break.
In less than two minutes after the second half began, Silano was fouled in the box receiving a penalty kick. She remained perfect on the year burying it lower left for her fourth multi-goal effort of the season and fifth goal of the week.
The Aguora Hills native now has 14 goals this season and 34 total points on the year putting her two goals and 10 points shy of both single-season program records with three regular season matches left in the season. She also tallied 13 shots on the night, setting the school record for most in a single-game previously set back in 2006.
CSUN would end the shutout in the 68th minute on a free kick from their leading scorer, Cindy Arteaga. It was the only blemish against Zora Standifer who registered four more saves on the night. She now owns a tremendous 84.1% save percentage on the season.
The 4-1 victory gives Long Beach State an insane 10-2 goal differential on the week earning six points in the standings. They sit alone atop of The Big West with a three-point lead over second place and have officially clinched a spot in The Big West Championships.
Next week is a big one as the Beach hits the road to take on Cal Poly on Thursday and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
