Silano is the first LBSU player to score twice in a single-game since Oct. 3, 2019.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-2-0) went on the road to San Diego and came out with a 2-1 win over SDSU (1-5-0) on Sunday night. Lena Silano had a stellar night scoring both Beach goals with a game-winning header in the 60th-minute.
The Beach has now won four straight matches against the Aztecs, going back to 2016.
San Diego State had control early holding most of the possession time in their attacking half, but the Beach defense held strong fending off eight first half shots.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 36th-minute as Summer Laskey had a run before drawing a foul inside the box rewarding Long Beach State a penalty kick. Lena Silano would convert, going right to beat the keeper's dive to the left and make it a 1-0 game.
In the 60th-minute, Long Beach State was set up for their fourth corner kick of the game. Kaylee Ramirez took it, launching it toward the back of the box for Silano. The junior forward connected on a header toward near-post for her second goal of the game giving the Beach a two-goal lead.
With the two goals, she is the first LBSU player to score twice in a single-game since teammate Elysia Laramie did it on October 3, 2019.
Morgan Houston-Shepherd put together another marvelous performance in goal for the Beach. The redshirt freshman totaled six saves on the night with four in the second half. She is up to 23 through the team's first five games of the season.
Long Beach State returns to the pitch on Saturday next week as they end their six-game season-opening road stretch at Washington.
