LONG BEACH, Calif. –
It was a tough Big West Conference opening week for Long Beach State as the women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 [22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 22-25] loss to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.

The contest marked the first conference meeting between the Beach (6-7, 0-2 Big West) and the Roadrunners (8-2, 1-1 Big West) and the fourth meeting overall.

Long Beach State got off to a slow start, but picked things up in the fourth set and finished the match leading CSU Bakersfield in kills (54-38), assists (54-38), and digs (65-63). However, the Runners were solid in blocking defense as they out-blocked the Beach 15.0 to 9.0.

The Beach received a pair of strong showings from their middles as senior Miranda Canez had a career-high with a career-best 11 kills on a .308 attack percentage, while adding a career-high seven blocks to go along with two digs and one ace. Freshman Kameron Bacon was also consistent in the middle as she tallied nine kills on a .286 attack percentage.

Overall LBSU had four players in double-digit kills as junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams led the way with 13, while Katie Kennedy and Erykah Lovett each added 11 of their own. Despite the balance offense from the Beach, and a pair of close sets, the Beach were unable to come away with a win.

Williams finished the match with a double-double as she added 12 digs, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff logged 15 digs, and junior defensive specialist Dylan Dela Cruz added 13.

Although the Beach put up solid numbers and battled the Runners through a total of 23 ties and 12 lead changes over four sets, they came up just short as the Roadrunners claimed the opening set, 25-22.

The second set was much like the first – a closely contested game. But a 4-1 Long Beach State run, highlighted by a kill from Williams, would put the Beach up 21-20. LBSU would use back-to-back kills from Lovett and Canez to take a 24-21 lead before evening the match at 1-set apiece with a 25-23 win.

The Runners kicked off the third set with a 5-1 run and led the entire frame as they out-hit the Beach .280 to .075. With LBSU out of sync, CSU Bakersfield took advantage and cruised to a 25-16 lead.

CSU Bakersfield started the fourth set on another 5-1 run, however, this time Long Beach State battled back and the two teams found themselves deadlocked at 11-11. Following several point exchanges, the Runners went on a 3-0 run to take a 21-17 lead, but LBSU would not back down. The Beach closed the gap (21-19) on a block assist by Williams and Canez, but the Runners surged ahead again and eventually closed out the set and match, 25-22.

Milica Vukobrat was the only Roadrunner to reach double-figure kills (10) in the match, while Seleisa Elisaia finished with a double-double (28 assists and 17 digs). She also added eight blocks and seven kills on a .235 hitting percentage.

Long Beach State will face Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
