Silano Scores Game-Winner with One Second Left to Beat UCSD, 2-1

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Lena Silano scored the game-winning goal with one second left on the clock as Long Beach State (4-4-1, 1-0-0 BWC) took down UC San Diego (2-6-1, 0-1-1 BWC) on Thursday night. It was her second goal of the night carrying the Beach to a conference opening victory.
The junior forward ends the night with six goals on the season and three game-winners. She is tied for the second fastest (nine games) to six goals in program history and is now just the 20th LBSU player since 1998 to score three or more game-winning goals in a single-season.
Silano's first goal gave Long Beach State an early lead, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute. Off a long ball from Kaitlin Fregulia, Silano created space against two Triton defenders launching it top shelf from just outside the eighteen as the Beach took the 1-0 lead.
That lead held into halftime with LBSU own an 8-4 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes.
Both teams matched each other through the next 40 minutes on the pitch until UC San Diego displayed some nice ball movement in their attacking third ultimately scoring the equalizing goal at the end of the 87th minute.
Looking to avoid overtime, UCSD applied as much pressure as possible in the Long Beach half before Kaylee Ramirez found space to clear the ball downfield toward Silano.
From there, Silano beat the last Triton defender to the loose ball and put the last second shot past the keeper toward the far post for the game-winner.
Long Beach State continues their streak, as they are now 4-0-2 in Big West openers going back to 2014.
They will look to keep the momentum going on Sunday as they host the Rainbow Wahine at George Allen Field. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
