A Torero goal with eight seconds left in the first proved to be the difference on Thursday night.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State (2-2-0) suffered a 2-1 loss to the University of San Diego (4-1) on Thursday night. The Toreros took the lead with eight seconds left in the first half and held off a late attack from the Beach offense in the second.
The Toreros got things started early with a goal in the third minute on a PK. On a cross through the box, the ball went straight into the hand of Kaitlin Fregulia to give USD the penalty kick leading to an early 1-0 deficit.
The equalizing goal came on the second of back-to-back corner kicks for Long Beach State with Charlotte Guillory launching it into the box for the assist. In a cluster of Beach and USD players, Maddy Perez came out with a touch into the lower left of the goal tying the game at one apiece.
It marks the first goal of the freshman's young career and she becomes the fourth different goal scorer for Long Beach State this season.
LBSU had nearly taken the lead in the 34th-minute as Sophie Jones shook off a defender and fired a missile from just outside the box that hit the far post and ricocheted out for San Diego to control.
Unfortunately, the difference maker came in the final eight seconds of the half as a chip shot over Houston-Shepherd gave the Toreros a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
The Beach had a late surge in the final 20 minutes of the match launching five shots, including two on net, but they were unable to find the back of the net to force overtime.
Long Beach State returns to the city of San Diego on Sunday as they will face the Aztecs of San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Desk. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
