LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-3-1) suffered a 1-0 loss in their home opener against Montana (4-4) on Thursday night. The Beach totaled 26 shots on the night, but none found the back of the net as the Grizzlies scored the game-winner in the 86th minute.
The Beach notched their first shot of the game in the second minute and it was an offensive barrage from there as they recorded 13 shots in the first half, four of which were on goal. Defensively, Montana was held to just two shots with Morgan Houston-Shepherd saving one.
Despite the huge shot differential, it was a scoreless tie heading into halftime.
The second half was more of the same as LBSU launched 13 more shots, but a Montana breakaway in the 86th minute put Houston-Shepherd in a one-on-one at the top of the box. Montana's Sydney Haustein put it right toward the far-post just out of the redshirt freshman's reach and gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead with less than five minutes to play.
With time winding down, the Beach had one final chance but the shot from Kaylee Ramirez was saved by the Montana keeper with 20 seconds left.
Lena Silano recorded 10 shots on the night becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach double-digit shots in a single-game. It ranks tied for third all-time and is the most since September 17, 2006.
Long Beach State will look to bounce back on Sunday as they take on the Cal Golden Bears. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at George Allen Field.
