Beach Women’s Soccer Drops Final Non-Conference Game to Cal

The Beach begin conference play on Thursday against UC San Diego.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-4-1) fell to Cal (4-1-2) by the score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. It was the final non-conference game for the Beach before Big West play starts next week.
In a very physical match, the Beach held off 13 first half shots from the Golden Bears as the teams were tied at zero through the first 45. Morgan Houston-Shepherd was busy, making six saves in the first half to keep Cal off the scoreboard.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 53rda minute as Cal got a run on the near side and a give-and-go between Karlie Lema and Amaya Gray led to the first goal of the game putting the Beach down 1-0.
Just under four minutes later, the Golden Bears found themselves on the attack again eventually earning a PK attempt. Ari Manrique took the shot putting it just out of reach of Houston-Shepherd to make it a 2-0 game.
With the loss, Long Beach State ends their non-conference schedule with a 3-4-1 record. They will open up Big West play at home hosting the Tritons on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
