LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Katie Kennedy earned the start on the right side and made the most of her performance as she tied her career-high with 15 kills on a .522 attack percentage, which was a new career-best, as she led Long Beach State to a 3-0 [25-23, 25-19, 25-23] sweep of San Diego State Tuesday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (5-5) kicked off their longest homestand of the season against the Aztecs (1-8) and hit .309 while holding SDSU to a .158 attack percentage. LBSU held the lead in almost every statistical category as the Beach led the Aztecs in kills (50-29), assists (44-24), and digs (44-39). San Diego State held the edge in blocking defense (8.0-5.0), while the two teams each recoded five aces.
In addition to Kennedy's solid performance, Long Beach State was led once again by junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams who tallied 19 kills on a .361 hitting percentage. The duo were paced offensively by sophomore setter Tia Chavira who dished out 40 assists to go along with eight digs and three kills.
Freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett and sophomore libero Nicole Hoff were stout defensively, both logging double-digit digs. Lovett finished the match with 11 digs, while adding eight kills, and a team-leading three aces. Meanwhile Hoff recorded her 10th double-figure dig performance of the season with 10 in the back row.
At the net, middle blockers Miranda Canez and Kameron Bacon, along with Chavira, each posted two blocks. Canez added three kills, while Bacon contributed two.
The all-around team effort saw the Beach pull away from the Aztecs in the second set as they seemed to find their groove after winning a close, 25-23, set one. The Beach jumped out in front early in the second set, but San Diego State managed to even the score at 10-10. However, Long Beach State would jump out in front for good, 14-11, thanks to a nasty ace that dropped just in front of the Aztecs from Dylan Dela Cruz. From there, the Beach pushed their lead up to six (22-16) and cruised to a 25-19 set two win.
Leading two sets to none, Long Beach State took a quick 6-1 lead in the third set and never trailed. However, San Diego State would not go quietly. The Aztecs chipped away at the LBSU lead and managed to make it a two-point game as the Beach held on to win, 25-23, to complete the sweep.
San Diego State was led by Zoi Faki's eight kills and eight digs, while Noa Miller and Kennedy Feuerborn teamed up at setter to record 10 and seven assists, respectively. Libero Natalie Smith registered 14 digs, while Jordan Goldsmith led the way with four blocks at the net.
Long Beach State will be back in action at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, Sept. 18 when the Beach host No. 21 San Diego at 4 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
