LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team turned in an excellent team effort on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid as the Beach upset No. 21 San Diego in four sets [25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23].

The Beach (6-5)'s win over the Toreros (6-3) marked the squad's first win over a nationally ranked team since 2016 when Long Beach State downed then-No. 12 Hawaii, 3-2, on October 8, 2016 inside the Walter Pyramid.

In tonight's match, Long Beach State out-hit San Diego .270 to .182 and led the Toreros in every statistical category except for blocks. The Beach led the way in kills (55-37), assists (49-34), aces (6-5), and digs (49-38), while the Toreros finished with 11.0 total team blocks to LBSU's 7.0.

Long Beach State's solid team effort was paced by sophomore setter Tia Chavira's 37 assists. Chavira would finish the match with a double-double as she added 12 digs, while also posting four kill and a career-high four aces on the night.

Chavira's solid passing led to another 20-kill performance by junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams who hit .318 (20-6-44) in the contest. Williams also added six digs, two blocks, and two assists. Joining Williams in double-digits was sophomore outside hitter Katie Kennedy who tallied a new career-high with 16 kills, including the match winner, on a career-best .538 attack percentage. Kennedy also contributed three blocks and three digs for the Beach.

Defensively, Long Beach State had three players log double-figure digs as the Beach were led by sophomore libero Nicole Hoff's 13. In addition to Chavira's 12 digs, junior defensive specialist Dylan Dela Cruz collected 10 digs in the back row to tie her season-best.

At the net, freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon continued her hot defense with five blocks to lead the Beach. She also contributed offensively adding four kills on a .333 attack percentage.

San Diego opened the game with a quick 5-1 lead, but Long Beach State stayed close and used a 4-0 run of its own, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Chavira to even the score at 10-10. Freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett, who currently leads the Big West in aces per set, served up her first of two aces in the match, to give Long Beach State a 12-11 lead. From there, the Beach jumped ahead, 20-15, on another 4-0 run en route to claiming the first set, 25-20.

Riding the momentum from the first set into the second, Long Beach State opened the second frame on a 5-1 run and extended their lead up to seven (10-3 and 17-10) on two occasions before closing out the set on a kill from Lovett as LBSU won 25-18 and took a 2-0 set lead over the Toreros.

San Diego began to fight back in the third set as the Toreros out hit the Beach .346 to .135. After the Toreros managed to a take a 10-6 lead, they never looked back. LBSU kept the game close, but San Diego surged ahead to a 25-19 victory.

Long Beach State got back into its groove in the fourth set and hit a whopping .423 as the Beach knocked down 15 kills. The LBSU defense was stout and limited the Toreros to a mere .083 attack percentage in the game. The Beach broke a 7-7 tie on a kill from senior middle blocker Miranda Canez and extended their lead to three (12-9) as San Diego called for a timeout. The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 18-18 as it was beginning to look like the match might go five sets. However, Long Beach State battled back and closed out the set and match on a 5-1 run to win 25-23.

San Diego was led by Kylie Pries and Grace Frohling who each recorded 11 kills in the match. Isadora Tercariol dished out 26 assists, while Annie Benbow logged 13 digs, and Leyla Blackwell posted seven blocks.

Long Beach State will kick off Big West Conference action on Friday, Sept. 24 against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
