The Beach Edge Gonzaga in Five-Set Match

Kashauna Williams finished the match with 22 kills, while Erykah Lovett posted a double-double

PULLMAN, Wash. – Long Beach State hit a season-best .366 on Friday morning en route to defeating Gonzaga, 3-2 [25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13] at the Cougar Challenge.
The Beach (4-4) were led by Kashauna Williams' 22 kills and Erykah Lovett's double-double as they pushed passed the Bulldogs (3-5) who were led by Kennedy Croft's 27 kills.
Williams hit a season-high .500 (22-3-28) in the match while adding four digs, and an assist. Meanwhile, Lovett logged her fifth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 15 digs. Also dominating offensively for the Beach was senior middle blocker Miranda Canez who registered seven kills on nine errorless swings for an impressive .778 attack percentage.
Setter Tia Chavira distributed 48 assists, while helping the offense with five kills of her own on a .375 attack percentage. She also served up a pair of aces.
On the defensive side, libeo Nicole Hoff fled the way with 17 digs, while also recording two aces. At the net, freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon continued her solid effort with four blocks.
The Beach won the opening set as a kill by Lovett followed by a block from Bacon gave Long Beach State an early lead (5-3) it would not relinquish. The Beach extended their lead to six (17-11) before winning 25-19.
Gonzaga managed to knock off LBSU in the second and third sets, 25-15 and 25-20, but Long Beach State would not go away. The Beach came back in the fourth set and opened up a six-point lead (16-10) on a kill by Avery Nelson followed by a block assist from Canez and Chavira. LBSU led the rest of the way winning 25-19 as they forced a fifth set.
The fifth and final set was a nail-biter as the Beach took an early 6-3 led on a kill from Williams, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie it at 7-7. From there, the two teams traded points until they found themselves deadlocked at 13-13. Long Beach State would go on to win the set and match on a kill by Williams, 15-13.
Croft led all scorers with 27 kills on a .462 attack percentage, while adding six digs, and an ace. McKenna Marshall also recorded double-figures with 16 kills on a .303 hitting percentage to go along with five digs. Keau Kamake'eaina dished out 46 assists and seven digs as the Bulldogs hit .305 in the match. Defensively, Alisa Kim registered 18 digs, while Juliette Russell posted two blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action later tonight to close out the Cougar Challenge against Northern Iowa at 6 p.m.
