Long Beach State Battles, But Falls to Northern Iowa in Straight Sets

PULLMAN, Wash. –
Despite out hitting Northern Iowa .238 to .205, Long Beach State came up short in three closely contested sets as the Beach suffered a 3-0 [21-25, 23-25, 26-28] sweep to the Panthers on Friday night at the Cougar Challenge.

Long Beach State (4-5) held the advantage over Northern Iowa (4-5) in kills (42-41), assists (41-37), digs (48-37), but the Panthers earned the edge in blocks (7.0 to 6.0) and aces (4 to 1).

Erykah Lovett and Kashauna Williams tied for the lead with 14 kills each as Lovett hit .367 and Williams hit .417 to lead the offensive attack. Lovett turned in an all-around solid showing with 12 digs for her second double-double of the day, while adding two assists, and two blocks.

Tia Chavira dished out 33 assists at setter to go along with four kills, four digs, and one block. Her four kills came on eight errorless swings as she hit .500 in the contest.

Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff turned in another solid performance as the Litchfield Park, Ariz., native logged 14 digs in the back row and contributed three assists to show case her excellent passing.

Freshman Kameron Bacon continued to lead Long Beach State at the net as she posted four blocks, while adding four kills.

Each set was a battle as the Beach and Panthers fought through a total of 28 ties and seven lead changes. The first set saw the Panthers hit .316 to the Beach's .314 as UNI claimed a 25-21 win over LBSU. Following a 9-9 tie, UNI went on a 5-1 run to jump out to a 21-16 lead before winning by four.

The Beach and the Panthers once again went back and forth in the second set and found themselves tied at 20-20. However, Northern Iowa managed to pull ahead and take a 25-23 victory over the Beach.

The third set was another tough fight that saw 13 ties and four match points. Every time UNI would pull ahead, the Beach would come back and even the score. However, with the score knotted at 26-all, the Panthers knocked down back-to-back kills to complete the sweep.

Three Panthers each finished the match with eight kills each in Tayler Alden, Inga Rotto, and Kaylissa Arndorfer. Alden and Jenna Brandt split time at setter as they finished with 17 and 18 assists, respectively, while Alden added six digs. Kaylee Donner's 10 digs were tops on the team, while Kira Fallert and Rotto each finished the match with four blocks.

Long Beach State has a quick turnaround as the Beach return home to host San Diego State on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
