Long Beach State Loses Tough Battle, 1-0, at No. 4 UCLA

It marks the first loss of the season for the Beach.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State (2-1-0) went toe-to-toe with No. 4 UCLA (3-0-0) all night, but came up short falling 1-0 for their first loss of the season. It is the third straight season, the match has been decided by a lone goal between the two teams.
The Beach is the only team this season to hold the Bruins to just a single goal.
Summer Laskey fired off the first shot of the match for either side missing wide left in the fourth minute. It was the only Long Beach State shot for the first half.
Defensively, the Beach held the number four-ranked Bruins scoreless despite seven first half shots. Morgan Houston-Shepherd played a big role in that, making a tremendous diving save in the 34th minute to keep UCLA off the scoreboard.
Long Beach State's only other shot came in the second half from Lena Silano. The junior forward had a small breakaway taking a shot just outside the box, but missed wide right. She has recorded 10 shots through the team's first three games.
The scoreless tie came to an end in the 78th minute as UCLA's Mia Fishel connected on a header inside the box on a diagonal cross from Michaela Rosenbaum.
After seven saves on Thursday, Houston-Shepherd recorded three more on Sunday giving her 11 for the season.
The Beach returns to action next week with a pair of matches in San Diego, beginning with the Toreros of USD on Thursday.
