MALIBU, Calif. – Long Beach State moved to 2-0-0 to start the season, upsetting No. 8 Pepperdine (2-1-0), 2-1, on the road on Thursday. It marks the first win over a ranked opponent since Aug. 24, 2017 and the first top ten win since defeating No. 4 UCLA to open the 2015 season.
All three goals were scored in the first 11 minutes with the first coming in the seventh minute off the foot of Summer Laskey. After the Beach defense stripped the ball from Pepperdine, Daria Petredes found Kayla Cannon down field who crossed it into the box perfectly for Laskey to finish.
In the ninth, the Waves tried a pass back but ended up leading Lena Silano perfectly into the open field. In a one-on-one with the keeper, Silano beat her right and had an easy tap in to give the Beach a 2-0 lead.
The goals for both Laskey and Silano mark the firsts of their collegiate careers.
Pepperdine had a quick answer putting one into the back of the net in the eleventh minute to make it 2-1, but Morgan Houston-Shepherd and the defense had the game on lock for the final 78 minutes after the Waves' goal.
Fresh off her first career Defensive Player of the Week honor, Houston-Shepherd recorded seven saves, four of which came in the second half to maintain the one goal advantage. Overall, Long Beach State staved off 10 second half Pepperdine shots en route to the upset victory.
With two wins to start the season, the Beach is off to their best start since 2012 when the team won their first three.
Long Beach State continues their six-match road stretch on Sunday as they head to Westwood for a matchup with No.4 UCLA.
