Long Beach State Opens Season with Shutout Victory over CSUN

8/19/2021 9:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Beach dominated on both sides of the ball coming out with a 2-0 victory.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Beach kicked off their regular season with a fantastic performance against CSUN on Thursday night, taking their 2021 opener 2-0 over the Matadors. It is the first season opening shutout win for Long Beach State since upsetting No. 4 UCLA, 1-0, in 2015.

After a lot of back-and-forth between the two teams to start the match, the scoreless tie came to an end with Kayla Cannon finding the back of the net in the 25th minute. After the Matador keeper saved a Summer Laskey near-post shot, the ball rebounded toward the middle of the box for an easy clean-up for Cannon giving the Beach a 1-0 lead.

It marks the third goal of the senior's career and her first since September 2, 2019. Laskey was credited with the first assist of her collegiate career.

Long Beach State wasted no time resuming their attack forcing a throw-in near the corner in the 27th minute. Kaylee Ramirez's throw set up Daria Petredes perfectly just outside the box and an absolutely perfect strike toward the far post gave the Beach their second goal of the night.

For Patredes, it is her first goal in the black and gold and gives her two for her collegiate career. Her first came as a member of USC during the 2018 season.

LBSU continued their offensive onslaught in the second half with seven more shots, three of which were on net. They finished the night with 15 total shots, seven on goal.

CSUN got a run downfield in the final minute forcing a pair of shots, but Aimee Medwin came through clutch with a goal line header save to preserve the shutout.

Lena Silano led the game with six shots (three on goal), followed by Laskey's three shots (two on goal).

As good as the Beach offense was, the defense was arguably better. In the 90 minutes, Long Beach State held the Matadors to just five shots. The only shot on goal from CSUN came in the final 30 seconds of the match as Morgan Houston-Shepherd notches the first shutout of her career.

Long Beach State is back in action next weekend as they head to Malibu next Thursday for a matchup with Pepperdine.
