Nadiyah Siqueiros’ goal in the 42nd minute held up thanks to three huge second half saves.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's defense held strong in the second half to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory over Loyola Marymount on Thursday night. Nadiyah Siqueiros scored the lone goal of the game, finding the back of the net in the final minutes of the first half.
Both offenses were held in check for the majority of the game, but the two teams combined for just four shots in the first half until the Beach put a goal on the board.
As the game entered the 42nd minute, Maddy Perez sent the ball toward the far corner, where Summer Laskey sent a perfect cross into the center of the box for Siqueiros to finish with her left and give LBSU the 1-0 lead.
The one-goal lead held thanks to a couple of huge saves on the goal line by the Long Beach State defense in the second half.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, the LMU offense rattled off three shots in the span of 1:48. Morgan Houston-Shepherd came up big saving two while the third missed wide right.
The third, and biggest, Long Beach save came in the 76th minute. With everyone scrambling in the box, LMU's Rene Wasi sent a shot past Houston-Shepherd toward the near post. Senior Kaylee Ramirez found herself positioned perfectly on the goal line making a beautiful header save to preserve the LBSU lead.
The save all, but secured Long Beach State's second exhibition win as they held on for the 1-0 victory and finish their preseason with a pair of victories.
The Beach begins their regular season next week with a non-conference matchup on the road against CSUN. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Northridge.
