Smith Finishes Ninth in High Jump Finals at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Jason Smith cleared 2.16m (7-1) for a ninth-place finish at the Qualifiers in Oregon.

EUGENE, Ore. – Jason Smith wrapped up competition in the High Jump finals at the United States Olympic Trials on Sunday. The senior came out with a ninth-place finish among the top 12 finalists.

The San Bruno native was fourth on the list to jump with the bar starting at 2.16m (7-1). After clipping the bar on his first attempt, he cleared it with ease on his second jump to advance in the competition.

With a height increase of two inches, the LBSU team captain looked at a new lifetime-best at 2.21m (7-3) on the next bar. He got the upper body clearance on all three of his attempts, but just barely clipped the bar with his legs on the way over and was eliminated.

With the ninth-place finish, that marks the end of a historic 2021 season for Jason Smith.
