The duo helped Long Beach State sweep Cal State Fullerton and win the Big West championship.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Two players played a critical part in all three wins last weekend for Long Beach State, and both were recognized by the Big West as Breezy Wise earned Player of the Week and Kellie White was named Pitcher of the Week in the final weekly awards of the season.
Kellie White was superb in three games, pitching every inning of a Cal State Fullerton series where the Beach needed to win all three games to win the title. After a 3-2 win in the opener, White unexpectedly had to pitch the second game of the series but came away with another win. The senior then threw a complete game shutout in the final game of the series, striking out eight Titans in a 1-0 win to capture the title.
Over the three games, White allowed just 11 hits and three runs while striking out 22 and giving up just one extra-base hit.
Offensively, another senior in Breezy Wise played a big part in all three wins, driving in a run in all three games. Wise hit .556 in the sweep, with a pair of multi-hit games. The senior brought in the first run of the three-run comeback in game one, hit a two-run home run in game two, and then drew a bases loaded walk in the finale in what would be the only run of the game.
The win is the second of the season for both players. They make a nice bookend to a unique and challenging last two years, as the duo was named to the All-Tournament Team in the Puerto Vallarta Classic to open the 2020 season.
Long Beach State begins the postseason at the Los Angeles Regional on Friday night against the hosts, UCLA. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
