Long Beach State Women's Water Polo Has Season End In Semifinal Loss To Hawai'i

Four Beach athletes score two goals as Long Beach State falls to Rainbow Wahine.
San Diego, Calif. — The Long Beach State women's water polo team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon in a 16-9 loss to Hawai'i in the Big West Tournament semifinals at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
It was a unique season, as the Beach (3-8) was allowed to do team activities in February - one of the last teams in the Big West to be cleared to resume workouts.
In the match, the Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first, but Elena Kotanchyan tied the game when she scored on an assist from Mariah Walker on a power play.
For the rest of the period, there were a total of six exclusions called that led to three goals and the Rainbow Wahine (10-1) leading 3-2 after the first quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Beach was called for two exclusions and Hawai'i took advantage of the power-play opportunity to take a 5-2 lead.
Gabriella Matafora-Adams scored her first of two goals to end Hawaii's run to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 4:31 remaining in the first half.
After Carmen Baringo scores for Hawaii, back-to-back penalties allowed the Rainbow Wahine to take a 8-3 lead heading into half time.
Kotanchyan's second goal of the match cut the lead to 8-4 but Hawai'i went on a 2-1 run to take a 10-5 lead with 5:51 left in the third quarter.
For the rest of the match, Hawai'i outscored the Beach 6-4 has they advanced to the Big West Championship.
Hawaii's Libby Gault led all scorers with four goals and Barker, Kotanchyan, Matafora-Adams and Anne de Kleer scored two goals for the Beach.
