Shannon Haddad struck out nine over four innings of work.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State was in full control of the action on Friday, opening up a three-game series with CSUN with a dominant 9-0 win over five innings. Naomi Hernandez and Alyssa Gonzalez each had three hits to pace the offense.
Long Beach State (10-5, 6-1 Big West) wasted no time getting going Friday. After a walk to Kyra Snyder and a hit from Gonzalez, the Beach mounted a two-out rally. RBI singles from Breezy Wise and Cam Cecil sandwiched around a run-scoring error put the Beach on top 3-0.
The offense went back to work in the second inning. After a leadoff single from Hernandez, Gonzalez picked up her second hit of the game to score the junior on a single to the wall, and then Gonzalez would herself score on a single from Ashley Machado as the Beach increase their lead to 5-0 over CSUN (2-5, 2-5 Big West).
In just one more inning Long Beach State hit the mercy run mark. Hernandez opened the third with a double and came home on an RBI single, the third single of the day for Gonzalez. The Beach then punished two errors from second baseman Sami Garcia, both scoring runs after Gonzalez and Suzy Brookshire each stole second to make the score 8-0.
The Beach added an insurance run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Hernandez to score Emily Salazar which was plenty of support for the LBSU pitching staff.
Shannon Haddad was dominant, allowing just one hit in four innings pitched while recording nine of her 12 outs via strikeout. With a 9-0 lead, Kim Sowder turned to Morgan Quinlan to finish off the contest, and the freshman responded continuing the command in the circle to close out the contest. The pair combined for the fourth shutout of the season for the Beach.
The series concludes with two games schedule for tomorrow, as the doubleheader with the Matadors is set to start at 1 p.m. CSUN will stream both games on BigWest.tv.
