Shannon Haddad tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in the victory.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Breezy Wise had a key early double and Alyssa Gonzalez homered for the second straight game as Long Beach State defeated UC Santa Barbara 7-3 on the road, the eighth straight win for the Beach.
Freshman Shannon Haddad tied her career-high with 11 strikeouts and improved to 8-0 on the year, as her Long Beach State (17-5, 12-1) teammates continued to scorch the ball. Coming in ranked 15th in the nation in batting, Long Beach State pushed across seven runs in support of Haddad on the way to the win.
The Beach and UC Santa Barbara (8-22, 5-5 Big West) started the contest with two quick innings before the Beach opened the scoring in the third.
Cam Cecil got the inning started with a solo home run, and that appeared to rattle Gauchos starter Emily Schuttish, who would walk three of the next four batters to load the bases. After an RBI groundout from Suzy Brookshire, Breezy Wise doubled to left to score two more and make the score 4-0 in favor of the Beach.
Ally Nodohara answered Cecil's solo home run with one of her own, and the Gauchos added a second run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to two runs.
The Beach picked up some additional insurance in the top of the seventh. Naomi Hernandez doubled to start the inning and Lilyanna Martinez followed with another double, scoring one run and leaving one on in front of Gonzalez, who homered for the third time this season to give the Beach a 7-2 lead.
The Gauchos added one more run in the bottom half on a Nodohara double, but Haddad was able to finish off the complete game.
The series continues with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and concludes with a non-conference game set to start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will continue to streamed via BigWest.TV.
