Home Sweet Home For Softball Who Sweep Home Opener

Long Beach State bounces back from two losses at San Diego with a sweep of the Toreros Tuesday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's leaders had big days, as the Beach returned from their second brief pause and looked extremely sharp, taking both games of a doubleheader against San Diego in the program's home opener.
In game one, the newcomer trio of San Jose State transfers all played their part in the Long Beach State (2-2) win. Shannon Haddad made her first start of the season, going the distance in the circle while her battery mate Ashley Machado had a single and Suzy Brookshire led the offense on the way to the win.
The Beach jumped out to an early lead, as Naomi Hernandez and Breezy Wise both reached on hits in the first inning, and Brookshire tripled into the gap to score both and give the Beach a 2-0 lead. Long Beach State then extended its lead in the third, as Hernandez singled and Wise doubled again in a carbon copy of the first inning.
Alyssa Gonzalez then brought home a third run with a single, and another Brookshire single gave her a third RBI and LBSU a 4-0 lead over San Diego (6-11). Haddad ran into a little trouble in the seventh, allowing four hits, but was able to get out of the inning and pick up her first victory of the season in the 4-2 win.
A returning face was the star of game two, as Kellie White was dominant in the circle in the win. Pitching a complete game shutout, White allowed just two hits while striking out ten to cruise to the win.
The Beach broke the deadlock in the third inning, as Hernandez drew a leadoff walk, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gonzalez followed with an RBI double to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.
Gonzalez delivered again in the fifth for an insurance run. Lilyanna Martinez singled to start the inning, and after a hit from Hernandez helped move her into scoring position, a sac fly from Gonzalez put Long Beach State in front 2-0, which would hold as White finished off the shutout.
Long Beach State continues a busy week on Thursday, playing a doubleheader at California Baptist before returning to the LBSU Softball Complex for a doubleheader with Loyola Marymount.
