No. 17 LBSU Splits Tri-Dual with Vanguard, No. 7 LMU

The No. 16 ranked Beach split their first tri-dual of the season with a 5-0 sweep of Vanguard before losing a tough battle, 3-2, to No. 7 Loyola Marymount.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 17 ranked Long Beach State (2-2) swept Vanguard (4-2) handedly to open up the day before falling in a hard fought battle, 3-2, to No. 7 Loyola Marymount (5-1).
Emily Mattoon and Jillian Rodriguez picked up the first point against Vanguard absolutely dominating with a 21-4, 21-10 victory in straight sets. The dual clincher came from Kenzie Holtz and Katie Kennedy who handedly took down their opposition, 21-7, 21-7.
It was a lot of back and forth against LMU as the Lions took the first point, but Alice Pratesi and Skyler Germann battled back to give the Beach their first point in three sets (18-21, 21-18, 16-14). Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs would lock up the second point in straight sets, 21-10, 21-18.
The most exciting match of the dual came in the fifth flight as Mattoon/Rodriguez opened up with a 21-16 victory in the first set, but were forced into a third set after falling 15-21. In set number three, the Beach duo overcame a four-point deficit forcing it into extra points. However, LMU would come out on top, 20-18, to tie the dual at two points each.
Holtz and Kennedy tried to mount a comeback of their own, but fell short falling in two sets giving Loyola Marymount the dual victory.
The Beach is back in action this weekend at Zuma Beach where they will take on No. 9 Pepperdine and No. 3 USC.
