Long Beach State loses fourth straight on buzzer beater by Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In another defensively charged contest, Long Beach State and Cal Poly battled each other down to the wire as the Beach fell, 45-42, on a buzzer beater by the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Mott Athletics Center.
Long Beach State (11-5, 10-4 Big West) was unable to score a field goal in the final 5:07 of the game, as Cal Poly (11-7, 7-5 Big West) took advantage and closed out the game on a 7-1 run including a buzzer beater from Abbey Ellis to hand LBSU its fourth-straight loss.
The Beach shot 30.6 percent in the game, while the Mustangs shot 37.8 percent in the defensive battle that saw Long Beach State collect 12 steals, while Cal Poly outrebounded LBSU 27-18 on defensive boards.
On the offensive side, the game saw five ties and 11 lead changes as neither team led by more than six points throughout the game.
The Big West Conference foes found themselves embattled in a one-point game (24-23) at halftime, with the Mustangs holding the slight edge.
However, Long Beach State came out of the break in action and used the third quarter to outscore Cal Poly 14-8 and take a 37-32 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Beach, however, shot just 20.0 percent from the field in the fourth quarter as they connected on 2-for-10 field goals and went 0-for-5 from long distance. With the scoring drought hampering LBSU, the Mustangs capitalized. Cal Poly shot 40.0 percent (4-for-10) in the final quarter to sweep the series.
Justina King led the Beach with 11 points, while adding five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Naomi Hunt finished the game with nine points, while Ma'Qhi Berry added seven points, five steals, and one assist. King, Jasmine Hardy, and Kristyna Jeskeova led LBSU with five rebounds each.
Cal Poly was led by Kirsty Brown's double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds), while Ellis concluded the game with 11 points of her own, and Zoe Stachowski posted 10 points.
Long Beach State will return home to host Hawaii on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games are set for 4 p.m.
