11/24/2021 4:36:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Erykah Lovett and Kashauna Williams lead the way with double digits kills.

DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Volleyball won their fifth match in a row for the first time since 2016, taking down UC Davis, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21) at The Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon.

The Beach (15-15, 9-10 Big West) dropped the first set, but then won the next three on the bounce to take down UC Davis (11-19, 7-12 Big West) three sets to one. Long Beach State's offense was in tune all afternoon, with a season-high .379 attacking percentage helping the Beach set the tone throughout the match.

Outside Hitters Erykah Lovett and Kashauna Williams lead the way for LBSU offensively, with 16 and 13 kills respectively. Lovett hit an even .500 and also added a team-high 13 digs to her performance, while Williams hit .333.

Tia Chavira dished out 37 assists, keeping the offense in sync all afternoon, and also chipped in with seven digs. Libero Nicole Hoff also added 11 digs to anchor the defense, putting in her 25th multi dig performance of the season.

In the first set the Beach went point-for-point with the Aggies, with the set eventually tied at 22-22, before the Aggies pulled ahead late on for a 25-23 set win. The set was tied at fifteen different points throughout as both teams felt each other before UC Davis was able to pull away.

Set two was a different story. The Beach jumped out to a 7-2 lead before UC Davis called a timeout. During that early run Tia Chavira had two service aces to set the tone for LBSU. Later on in the set the Aggies clawed their way back within three at 23-20 before Katie Kennedy slammed home a kill to make it set point. Kameron Bacon then tied the match at one set a-piece with an ace to take the set 25-20.

The Beach continued the trend in the third set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead. LBSU then stretched the lead to double digits, taking an 18-8 lead and kept that 10-point advantage the rest of the way, en route to a 25-15 set win. Williams' 10th kill of the match earned the set point for the Beach, and a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

In the fourth, things stayed close early on with the set tied at 6-6, before the Beach started asserting themselves. LBSU rattled off three points in a row to take a 9-6 lead courtesy of a Bacon block. The teams would trade points with each other throughout the middle portion of the set before LBSU retook control late on, taking a 21-17 lead. The Beach closed out the match with another Bacon kill, taking the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

The Beach will close out the 2021 season on Saturday at UC Riverside at 5 p.m.
