RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State finished their 2021 season in style, earning their sixth win in a row, taking down UC Riverside, 3-1 (28-30, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21) on Friday evening.
LBSU (16-15, 10-10 Big West) fell in overtime in the first set, but then rallied to win the next three in a row to take down UC Riverside (6-24, 2-18 Big West) three sets to one. Kashauna Williams and Katie Kennedy led the way for LBSU, racking up 17 and 12 kills respectively.
Nicole Hoff anchored the defense spectacularly with a career-high 27 digs, while Miranda Canez tied her career high in blocks, with seven.
In the first set LBSU and Riverside traded points back and forth the entirety of the set, with the score tied at fifteen different points throughout. With the score tied at 22-22, Tia Chavira and Canez teamed up for a huge block to give the Beach the lead, 23-22. Riverside would battle back however and took a 24-23 lead before a service ace sent the first set to overtime. The teams continued to trade points, before Kameron Bacon and Williams teamed up for another block to give LBSU a 27-26 lead. However, UC Riverside were able to chip away at the lead and eventually take the first set 30-28.
Just like the previous match against UC Davis, set two was a different story. The Beach jumped out to a 8-4 lead, forcing a UC Riverside timeout. During that early run the Beach had two blocks, setting the standard for the rest of the match. With the Beach leading 17-8, Chavira set up Erykah Lovett from the backrow, who slammed the ball home to extend LBSU's lead to double digits 18-8. UC Riverside would gain a few points back before the Beach put the second set to bed off a service error by Riverside, 25-18.
The teams traded points to begin the third, with neither team able to get more than a two point lead. Williams then took over the middle portion of the set, rattling off four kills over the span of six Long Beach points, to give them a 12-11 lead. A service error by Riverside then gave Long Beach a 15-13 advantage, before Erykah Lovett extended the Beach lead to 16-13 with a service ace. LBSU would keep the lead for the rest of the set, running out 25-21 winners when Katie Kennedy clinched the game with her eighth kill of the match, taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.
In the fourth, things stayed close early on with the set tied at 9-9, before the Beach started to pull away. LBSU took a 15-13 lead midway through the set courtesy of another Williams kill, this time her 15th of the match, and did not trail again. LBSU then took a 20-16 lead after a long rally which ended with an attack error by UC Riverside. The Highlanders would get to within a point with the score 22-21, but the Beach put a stop to their run with a Katie Kennedy kill, swaying the momentum back in favor of the Beach. LBSU then scored two points in a row to take the set 25-21 and the match three to one.
