LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State celebrated its seniors Miranda Canez and Avery Nelson before the match against UC Irvine, then promptly rolled over the Anteaters in straight sets [25-16, 25-17, 25-11] on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid to extend their winning streak to four matches.
The Beach (14-15, 8-10 Big West) have been on a roll as of late, winning five of their last six matches, including back-to-back sweeps this weekend. The Anteaters dropped to 16-12 on the year, while falling to 9-9 in Big West action.
Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams led the Beach with 13 kills on a .391 attack percentage, while sophomore opposite Katie Kennedy hit .462 with eight kills, and Nelson logged seven kills on a .429 hitting percentage.
The Beach hit .310 as a team with Tia Chavira distributing 28 assists on the night. Chavira also added seven digs, four kills on nine errorless swings for a .444 attack percentage.
Freshman Kailia Lopez came off the bench and had a phenomenal serving run as she led the Beach on an outstanding 15-0 run in the third set, including a career-high five aces, to break the game wide open.
While the LBSU offense was on fire, so was the defense. The Beach forced the Anteaters into a negative attack percentage (-.044) as UC Irvine committed four more attack errors (23) than they did kills (19) on the night.
The Long Beach State backrow was anchored by freshman defensive specialist Jenna Giambi (9 digs), Nelson (8 digs), as well as sophomore libero Nicole Hoff (5 digs), and Williams (5 digs).
At the net, Canez and Williams posted five blocks, while freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon registered four.
Long Beach State was hot from the start as the Beach went on a 4-0 run to take an early 4-1 lead. LBSU opened the game up on a 7-0 run to jump ahead 11-2. With a comfortable lead, Long Beach State led the rest of the way and cruised to a 25-16 win.
The Beach continued their solid serving runs into the second set as they broke a 6-6 tie with three-straight points highlighted by a kill from Nelson. Long Beach State led the rest of the way and defeated UC Irvine, 25-17, to take a 2-0 set lead over the Anteaters.
UC Irvine used a 4-0 run of its own in the third set to take a 7-4 lead over Long Beach State. However, the lead would not last long as Lopez took the ball and began her masterful serving run as the Beach rattled off 15-straight points to break the game wide open (21-8). Despite UCI utilizing both of their timeouts during that stretch, the Beach were unfazed. LBSU went on to complete the sweep with a 25-11 set three win.
The Anteaters' leading scorer was Onye Ofoegbu with six kills on a team-high .105 attack percentage. Setters Kelly Negron and Caitlin Kikta dished out nine and four assists, respectively, while Bailey Darnell recorded 10 digs in the back row.
Long Beach State will conclude the season with a pair of road matches at UC Davis on Wednesday, Nov. 24 and UC Riverside on Saturday, Nov. 27.
