Beach Tennis Posts Solid Saturday at Watanabe Classic

Claire Le Du advanced to the finals of her singles flight, and the Beach posted six wins across singles and doubles play.
LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Long Beach State Tennis continued play at the Watanabe Classic on Saturday, where Claire Le Du earned a spot in the singles final of her flight.
"We had some big improvements today," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "I'm very proud of our performance."
The Beach had a very successful day in singles play. Redshirt Freshman Claire Le Du advanced to her second tournament final of the fall on Saturday, she took down Aura Fang of the hosts UNLV in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Also in singles play, Zara Lennon set the tone in her match, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Nikola Homolkova continued the trend with a straight sets win of her own, only dropping a single game, en-route to a 6-1, 6-0 win. In her match, Sheena Masuda bounced back after a back-and-forth first set which she narrowly dropped 6-7 (4), winning two straight sets 6-0, 6-4 to complete the comeback.
In flight four Andreea Ciornei fought point-for-point with Valentina Del Marco of Grand Canyon, but fell in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-7. Zuzanna Szczepanska also took part in flight four, but came up short in her match 5-7, 2-6.
The Beach also won two of three doubles matches on Saturday. Lennon and Szczepanska only lost one game in their match, running out 6-1 winners in their match. Le Du and Ciornei earned their first win as a doubles pair, coming out on top in a back-and-forth contest 6-4. Finally, Masuda and Homolkova battled in their semifinal in doubles play, but came up short, falling 6-1.
Play is scheduled to resume on Sunday at 10 A.M., with doubles play followed by singles action.
