
Champion Crownded on Final Day of San Diego State Fall Classic

Claire Le Du won the gold singles flight of the San Diego State Fall Classic on Sunday.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Redshirt Freshman Claire Le Du was crowned the gold flight singles champion Sunday, as the Beach wrapped up competition at the San Diego State Fall Classic.
Le Du entered her first singles competition as a collegiate athlete on Friday and came out on Sunday with a perfect record. After winning her quarterfinal match in straight sets on Friday and being taken to three sets in her semifinal match on Saturday, Le Du won the gold flight in straight sets over Laura Marco Mas of San Jose State Sunday, 6-4, 6-2.
"Really proud of Claire for winning her singles draw in her first collegiate competition," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "As a team we performed well this weekend and are looking forward to playing at home next weekend at the Rhodes Tennis Center."
Also in singles action, freshman Andreea Ciornei earned her first collegiate win in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 in the gray flight. In the scarlet flight, Zara Lennon came up just short in a tightly contested championship match against the former #49 ranked world junior Oleksandra Andrieieva of San Jose State, taking the match to three sets 7-5, 3-6, 2-6. In the black flight, Nikola Homolkova battled valiantly in the championship match, but finished runner-up in the division falling 2-6, 5-7.
Also, in the black flight Arina Babkova battled throughout the third-place match, but came up short 3-6,4-6. In addition, Zuzanna Szczepanska competed in championship match of the silver flight but fell 0-6, 2-6. Finally, Sheena Masuda lost another tightly contested match 3-6, 3-6 in the gold flight.
In doubles play, the Beach dominated going 3-0 on Sunday. The new pairing of Lennon and Le Du controlled their match, and did not drop a single game, winning 6-0. Masuda and Homolkova followed in the same fashion, with another 6-0 win for the Beach, marking the second doubles pair on the day to not drop a game. Finally, the other new doubles pairing of Babkova and Szczepanska continued the trend, running out as 6-4 winners in their match to complete the doubles sweep for LBSU.
Over the course of the weekend, Beach athletes finished 11-9 in singles play, while in doubles action they finished 5-4.
Up Next: Long Beach State Tennis returns home to the Rhodes Tennis Center for the Beach Fall Tournament which will take place Friday, Oct. 8 – Sunday, Oct. 10.
