LBSU Women’s Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at CSU Bakersfield

Katie Kennedy finished the match with a career-high .609 attack percentage with 14 kills of 23 errorless swings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 [20-25, 25-27, 20-25] contest to CSU Bakersfield on Friday night at the Icardo Center.
LBSU has now lost four matches in a row as the Beach drop to 9-13 on the year and 3-8 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Roadrunners improve to 13-6 overall and 6-5 in league play.
The Beach hit .238 to the Runners .240 in the match, and held the lead in assists (40-38), digs (38-36), and blocks (7.0-6.0), but lost the serve game (4 aces to none). Overall, the conference foes battled each other through 18 ties and six lead changes in a closely contested match.
Sophomore opposite Katie Kennedy led all scorers with 14 kills on 23 errorless swings for a career-high .609 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams added 11 kills of her own, while freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett added six.
Tia Chavira got the start at setter and finished the match with 30 assists and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She also contributed four kills and three blocks in the match.
Chavira led the backrow with double-digit digs as Lovett and junior defensive specialist Dylan Dela Cruz finished the match with seven digs apiece, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff added six, and Williams contributed five.
At the net, Miranda Canez posted four blocks to lead the squad, while Chavira's three tied Williams for second.
Despite several solid performances and a number of rallies, Long Beach State came up short. Following an early 4-4 tie in the first set, the Beach fell behind the Runners 10-4 after Bakersfield used a 6-0 run to break the game open. LBSU managed to cut CSUB's lead down to one (12-11), but the Runners went on a 7-1 run to jump out in front 19-12 before taking the first set, 25-20.
The Beach used a 5-0 run of their own in the second set to break a 2-2 tie and take a 7-2 advantage. Long Beach State led most of the match, despite Bakersfield chipping away and closing the gap a few times. After a 4-1 Runners run cut LBSU's lead down to one (19-18), the Beach called a timeout to regroup. Following the break in action, Bakersfield turned their deficit into a three-point lead, 23-20, before pushing it to set point, 24-22. Long Beach State battled back and tied the game at 24-all on a kill from Kennedy. The Runners jumped out in front 25-24, and the Beach once again tied things up thanks to Kennedy. However, the Runners managed to close the set, 27-25, to win the game in overtime.
The third set, saw the Runners take a quick 3-0 run. However, the Beach would not go quietly. Long Beach State battled Bakersfield through eight ties in the third set, before CSUB went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead they would not relinquish. Although LBSU made it a one point game on several occasions, the Runners were able to put the game away, 25-20, to complete the sweep.
CSUB was led by Hayley McCluskey's 10 kills, while Selesia Elisaia finished with a double-double (30 assists and 10 digs), and Brooke Boiseau led the Runners at the net with five blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Cal Poly. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
