
Three Beach Athletes Advance to Finals at San Diego State Fall Classic

Three Beach athletes advanced to the finals of their singles flights Saturday afternoon at the San Diego State Fall Classic.
SAN DIEGO, Calif- Three Beach athletes advanced to the finals of their singles flights Saturday afternoon at the San Diego State Fall Classic. Overall Long Beach State went 4-2 in singles play and 0-3 in doubles action.
"Today was another strong day of tennis for us with 3 players advancing to the finals of their singles draw," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello.
Zara Lennon continued her strong play in the scarlet flight with a straight sets win 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals tomorrow. Over the course of the weekend Lennon has only dropped one set in singles play going 4-1 throughout the weekend. In the black flight, Nikola Homolkova dominated her match, only dropping a single game enroute to a 6-0, 6-1 win to advance to the finals. Also, in the black flight Arina Babkova fell in a tightly contested match 1-6, 4-6, and will play in the third-place match on Sunday.
In the silver flight Zuzanna Szczepanska battled to a 2-6, 5-7 result in her match and will play in the third-place match on Sunday. Claire Le Du advanced to the finals of the gold flight, improving her collegiate singles record to 2-0, with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) thrilling win over Lara Marcos Mas of San Jose State. Also in the gold flight, Sheena Masuda earned her first collegiate singles win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Schmitz of UTEP. Masuda will play in the fifth-place match of the gold flight on Sunday.
In doubles action Lennon and Bakovva fell 6-0 in their match in the scarlet flight and will play for fifth place on Sunday. Homolkova and Masuda came up just short of the championship match in the black flight falling 6-7 (8-10). They will play fellow beach athlete's Szczpanska and Le Du who lost their semifinal 6-3, for third place in the black flight.
Action is scheduled to resume on Sunday at 9 a.m with doubles action followed by singles flights.
