LBSU Tennis Opens Play at SDSU Fall Classic

The Beach won five of seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches on the opening day of the San Diego State Fall Classic on Friday.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Long Beach State tennis opened its fall season at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Friday, going 2-1 in doubles play and 5-2 in singles matches. In addition, five singles players advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights, as well as two doubles teams.
"For our first tournament back, the team competed really well today," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We had many strong results and a lot to build on moving into tomorrow."
In doubles action, the freshman duo of Sheena Masuda and Nikola Homolkova did not drop a point en-route to a 6-0 win to advance to the semifinals of the black flight. Another freshman duo Claire Le Du and Zuzanna Szczepanska also advanced to the other semifinal of the black flight, with a 6-2 win. In the scarlet flight, Zara Lennon and Arina Babkova fell in a closely contested match, 6-3.
In singles action, Lennon got her junior campaign off to a great start in the scarlet flight, with a 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win over San Jose State's Alba Pedrero Galindo to advance to the semifinals. In the black flight Babkova earned her first collegiate win with a straight sets victory 6-3, 7-5, to progress to the semifinals. Also in the black flight, Homolkova advanced to the semifinals, doing so in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
In the silver flight Szczepanska won a closely contested affair 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 over San Jose State's Irena Muradyan to move on to the semifinals. Le Du earned her spot in the semifinals of the gold flight as well with a 6-4, 7-5 straight sets win over Valentina Del Marco of Grand Canyon. Also in the gold flight Masuda dropped a closely contested match 6-7(3), 2-6. Finally, in the gray flight Andreea Ciornei battled to a 5-7, 1-6 result.
Action is scheduled to resume on Saturday, October 2 at 9 a.m. with doubles action to start the day, followed by singles flights.
